Description
Carolina Reaper seeds. The Carolina Reaper (formerly known as HP22B) was the official Hottest Chilli in the World from 2013 – 2023, when it was overtaken by Pepper X. It delivers an average of 1,641,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). It has said to peak at an incredible 2.2 million SHUs.
It was developed by Ed Currie in the U.S. – originally it was a hybrid between a Habanero and Naga Viper, both of the Capsicum Chinense family.
The Carolina Reaper is described as having a fruity, sweet taste with a hint of cinnamon and chocolate undertones. At least, for about a second, until the heat kicks in and melts your face off!.
Our climate here in Perth isn’t ideal for them, as they need a long growing season. They often don’t start producing pods until well into February/March – however, they are worth the wait! They can also take a long time to germinate, and need precise temperature and moisture control, so please be patient.
The pods have an evil, gnarly appearance, and a good percentage should have the trademark stinger tail – however, we find the pod shapes vary dramatically, even on a single plant.
